Education
In each of the six Birmingham-Bloomfield communities, where more than 50 percent of residents hold a four- year college or advanced degree, education is highly valued. This tradition of achievement and emphasis on excellence has resulted in some of the finest public, private and parochial schools in the country. Educational proficiency is routinely demonstrated in the high scores that local public and private school students achieve on national and state achievement and aptitude tests.
Birmingham Public Schools
The Birmingham school district enrolls approximately 7,500 students in its eight elementary, one district-wide, two middle and two high schools.
Bloomfield Hills Public Schools
Approximately 5,700 students are enrolled in the Bloomfield Hills district’s six elementary, three middle, two high schools and special education center, plus an additional 400 students in the preschool program. Three special facilities are an integral part of the curriculum: the 100-acre Charles L. Bowers School Farm, the 32-acre E. L. Johnson Nature Center, and an authentic one-room school house, built in 1859.
Consolidated School
A new option for high school students was launched for the 1996-97 school year: the International Academy. Located in Bloomfield Township but supported by a consortium of 12 school districts and a number of community business partners, the International Academy offers an International Baccalaureate program, a course of study leading to an IB diploma, widely accepted by universities and colleges around the world as evidence of superior achievement. The 205-day school year and close to eight-hour school day are designed to parallel the work environment, rather than the more traditional academic schedule.
Private and Parochial Schools
The support for excellence in private and parochial education is evident in the number of independent schools located in the Birmingham-Bloomfield community.
Higher Education
More than 30 colleges and universities are located in the metropolitan Detroit area. Eleven of them are located in Oakland County. The largest degree-granting institutions are Oakland University, Oakland Community College with its Advanced Technological Center, and Lawrence Technological University. Extension courses from Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Madonna, Michigan State and Oakland universities, and University of Detroit Mercy are offered at the Birmingham Groves High School campus. The nationally recognized Cranbrook Academy of Art, a private arts institution, offers advanced degrees in art. Walsh College offers the final two years of a bachelor’s degree in business, as well as a graduate program in business and continuing education programs.
